The Rural Tibetan Elementary Schools Project serves children in remote rural villages on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. These rural villages are very poor farming and nomadic communities and had no schools at all until recently. Fundraising initiatives over the past few years at the Garchen Buddhist Institute in Chino Valley, Arizona, have collected sufficient funds to complete construction of schools in GarGon and at Chethak Ruchen. In these schools, the children learn Tibetan and Chinese, and the curriculum functions to preserve the Tibetan culture, including the Tibetan language and traditional folk traditions.
Support is now needed to cover the day-to-day operating expenses of these schools and to support the children who attend them (i.e., to provide supplemental food, warm clothing, school supplies, teachers' salaries, and basic medical care).
Tibet Aid and the Garchen Buddhist Institute have been sending volunteers and monks to the schools a few times each year. We have been able to deliver letters from sponsors, but we have received very few letters from the children, as supplies are still scarce and translators a true luxury. Currently there is no email or postal service to reach these children due to the political conditions in Tibet. Sponsors who would like to join Tibet Aid in traveling to these remote villages are invited to contact us for further details.
